  • Paro Bhutan Weather

    Located at the temperate continental climate zone, the weather in Paro is mild and generally warm, with humid summer. With the highest temperature of 22 ℃, July is usually the hottest month of the year. January has the lowest temperature to -1 ℃. Paro receives the most rainfall in summer, especially in July.

  • Thimphu Bhutan Weather

    Similar to Paro, Thimphu weather is warm and temperate as well. Summer is warm and humid, with the temperature high up to 22 ℃ in July. And July is also the month in a year that sees the greatest amount of rainfall. Winter is comparatively cold and the lowest temperature in January can drop to -2 ℃.

  • Punakha Bhutan Weather

    Punakha experiences a milder climate than Paro and Thimphu. The hottest month of the year is July, with the highest temperature of 27 ℃. January has the coldest temperature of 5 ℃, but it is comparatively warmer than most of the neighboring destinations. Punakha sees heavy rainfall in the monsoon summer, and the most rains occur in July.

  • Bumthang Bhutan Weather

    Affected by the subtropical climate, Bumthang in central Bhutan has generally warm weather, with hot wet summer and chilly winter. Altitudes range from 2600 to 4500 meters, so the temperature gets colder when you go higher up. The highest temperature is up to 23 ℃ in June, and the lowest temperature is -7 ℃ in March. There is a lot of rainfall in summer, and in winter it is quite dry.

  • Bhutan Monsoon Season

    From late June to August, Bhutan experiences the monsoon season that is also the off-season of tourism. The heavy rain makes it not a good time to take outdoor activities, but the visit to Dzongs and Monateries is still avaliable.

  • Bhutan Trekking Season

    As one of the best destinations for Himalaya mountain trekking, Bhutan has two ideal trekking seasons (Spring and Autumn), which offer perfect clear sky, dry air and comfortable temperature for trekking.

1. Does it snow in Bhutan?

Yes, Bhutan does have snow in winter. Starting from December, snows fall in central and northern Bhutan. In January, heavier snowfall comes to northern Bhutan. Cities like Paro, Thimphu, Punakha and Bumthang receive up to 20cm of snow throughout the month, with night temperatures below zero. February sees the most snowfall in Bhutan. Snow in some of the main destinations can reach a couple of feet deep, but not affecting Bhutan winter tour much.

Bhutan is a paradise for bird lovers, and the best season for birdwatching starts from September until June.

Most of the bird species like cuckoos, swifts, bee-eaters, warblers and flycatchers, Pallas’s Fish Eagle, White bellied Heron, etc. can be found from March to June and September to November at the banks of main rivers and around secluded big lakes. The rare black-necked cranes are of an exception. They spend the winter in Bhutan in November and return to the Tibetan Plateau in March. You can spot the cranes in Phobjikha Valley of the western Bhutan, Bumthang in the central Bhutan and in Bumdeling in the eastern Bhutan.

When is the best time to visit Bhutan and surrounding Himalaya destinations? Basically, spring from March to May and autumn from September to November are the best time to visit Bhutan. The weather of spring Bhutan is generally mild and rainfall is less. The clear sky offers great views of the high Himalayan Mountains to the north. At the hillsides and in the valleys, beautiful wildflowers begin to bloom. The autumn weather in Bhutan is cool, with clear, bright and sunny sky and humid air. Bhutan in autumn is a kingdom of golden, attracting the greatest number of tourists in a year to travel here.
