Do I need Bhutan Visa for taking a flight to Paro from India?
The need for a visa to enter Bhutan mainly depends on your nationality, and some nationalities do not require a visa or even a pre-arranged Bhutan tour to travel this Kingdom.
For Indian Passport Holders
While a visa is not required for citizens of India, due to the 1949 Treaty of Bhutan, which gives Indian citizens freedom of movement into and out of the kingdom as they wish, valid identification is required for Indian citizens to enter Bhutan.
It is easy for Indian Citizens to travel to Bhutan with valid identification.
The valid IDs that are accepted for Indian citizens to enter Butan includes a valid Indian passport; a valid Indian Voter ID Card with a photo, and an Identification Slip, which has to be issued by the Indian Consulate’s Office in Phuentsholing, once you have presented proof of your Indian citizenship.
While the passport and Voter ID can be used at either Paro International Airport or any of the border crossings, the Identification slip can only be used when crossing the land border from Jaigaon to Phuentsholing.
Notice:
Citizens of Bangladesh and the Maldives can also travel freely to Bhutan without the need for a visa or pre-arranged tour, as long as they have a valid passport with at least six months’ validity remaining at the time of entry.
For International Travelers from India to Bhutan
For everyone else, a Bhutan visa is required to enter the Kingdom. To get the visa, travelers must be on a pre-arranged tour of the kingdom with a registered travel agency from the country. A visa for Bhutan cannot be applied for personally, and once you have booked and paid for your tour, we will make the application for the visa on your behalf using a scanned color copy of your passport.
Once the visa has been approved, we will send a copy of the Visa Approval Letter issued by the Tourism Council of Bhutan and the Bhutanese Immigration Department by e-mail. You will need to print it out to board the flight to Paro. Once you arrive at Paro International Airport, the immigration officers will stamp the visa into your passport.
All international tourists must have the letter as proof of the approved visa in order to both book and board flights to the kingdom with the two Bhutanese carriers, Bhutan Airlines and Druk Air.
You will also be issued with the permits that you are required to have for travel around Bhutan, such as the primary permit for visiting areas of Thimphu and Paro, the Restricted Areas Permit for tours outside Paro and Thimphu, and Temple Permits to visit specific temples, Lhakhangs, and Dzongs in Bhutan.
