There are almost countless monasteries and fortresses in Bhutan, which is an unmissable part of Bhutan tourism. The world famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery sits in a 900 meters high cliff in Paro Valley, and it is what you can’t miss in Bhutan. Punakha Dzong, the most beautiful monastery of Bhutan, is also a must-visit spot. In Gangtey, there is a fabulous temple named Gangtey Gompa located to waiting for your exploration. If you go further into central Bhutan, pay a visit to the magnificent Trongsa Dzong, which is really mysterious and gorgeous when the dzong is in mist.
In the important dzongs, grand and traditional festivals, called tshechus, will be held. For example, Paro Tshechu is one of the biggest festivals of the country, held in Paro Rinpung Dzong every spring.
Bhutanese build their houses in the valleys that have rivers nearby. Hills and mountains around are covered by dense forest and lush grass. Therefore, if you stand on a high location, you are able to find the valley in green, with traditional cottages scattered, which is one of the most beautiful landscapes over the world. Terraced rice fields around the houses are also what you can’t find in any modern cities. The color of the fields vary in different seasons. Generally, spring and autumn are the best two seasons for photography.
Haa Valley and Phobjikha Valley are the most popular valleys for visitors. The road to Haa is better than that to Phobjikha Valley, but the scenery of Phobjikha Valley turns to be more natural than that in Haa Valley.
Bhutan is said to be the happiest country in the world. People here live a simple and satisfied life. They believe that Gross National Happiness is more important than Gross Domestic Product. They focus on the sustainable development of tourism and other industries. They live in traditional style houses and wear national dress. They are proud of their traditional arts and culture. The modern industrial development almost have no impact on their quite and slow-pace life.
To step closer to the happy Bhutanese people, you can take a homestay. You stay with a local family in their homestay cottage, which is where they live all the time.
