  • 1. Can you do meditation at Tiger's Nest Monastery?

    Yes, you can do meditation at the Tiger's Nest Monastery. The Tiger's Nest Monastery was built around the Taktsang Senge Samdup cave, where Guru Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, meditated in the 8th century. He is the founder of Buddhism and the Nyingmapa school of Mahayana Buddhism in Bhutan.

    As you approach the monastery, you will come across forests of prayer flags. This site will prepare you for mediation at the holy place. The place is naturally conducive for meditation having been blessed by several enlightened beings in the past. Then you will continue hiking up to Taktshang Monastery, one of the greatest holy places associated with Guru Rinpoche in the entire Himalayan region. It's calm and tranquil, offering a perfect environment most suited for meditation.

  • 2. Is there any meditation center in Thimphu?

    For meditation in Thimphu, you can take a hike to the Tango Monastery and Cheri Monastery. The two monasteries are located north of Thimphu on two adjacent hills. You will first visit the Tango Monastery. The Monastery for Buddhist Institutes is an hour walk uphill through well-maintained pathways. Tango was founded by Lama Gyalwa Lhanama in the 13th Century and its present structure built by Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye in 1688. The Tango Monastery covers the caves where originally meditation and miracles were performed by saints from the 12th Century onwards.

    Later, you will transfer to the Cheri Monastery, also another one and a half hour hike uphill. Also called as Chagri Dorjeden, the Monastery was established in 1620 by Lama Zhabdrung. Cheri was the first of a series of monasteries built by Lama Zhabdrung, the saint who unified Bhutan. Presently the Monastery serves as a major teaching, meditation and retreat center.

    Yes, there are flights available for you to transfer from Bumthang to Paro and vise versa.

    As you know, Bumthang, located in central Bhutan, is an important destination for meditation and is far away from Paro. The driving distance from Paro to Bumthang is about 314 kilometers, taking more than 8 hours to drive. To shorten the time wasted on transportation, you can take the internal flight from Bumthang to Paro and vise versa.

    Drukair operates the domestic route from Paro to Bumthang. The flight costs are $170 USD from Paro to Bumthang. Currently, domestic flights tickets can only be purchased at the Drukair Thimphu office. International travelers wishing to book Drukair’s domestic flights should contact your travel agents to make a booking. A passport copy will be required for booking Drukair’s domestic flights.
